Coal gets a bad rap. Environmentalists call it a dirty fuel, while Santa Claus uses it to punish naughty little boys and girls. That really is a shame because coal has the power to produce a lot of energy, as well as high-paying jobs. Not only that, but coal produces some really good pizza.
SOurce: Flickr.
My wife and I stopped by a pizza place the other night which is known for baking it in coal-fired ovens. Believe it or not, coal was the fuel of choice for pizzerias early last century. This restaurant goes back to those roots and uses coal because it delivers a unique flavor and consistency that's not possible from wood or gas ovens. I can certainly agree with that statement; the pizza was fantastic.
The coal used in the process is called anthracite, and the company sources it from Pennsylvania and has it delivered by railroad. Each restaurant uses about 100 pounds of coal per day, which it says burns cleaner and is more eco-friendly than gas or wood-fired methods. All that being said, at 100 pounds per day and just a handful of locations across the country, coal-fired pizza ovens won't be a big future driver for Appalachian basin coal producers like CONSOL Energy (NYSE: CNX ) or Alpha Natural Resources (NYSE: ANR ) .

Some possible upside targets if PRKR gets into that gap down zone with volume are $5 to $6 a share.
Traders can look to buy PRKR off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 200-day moving average of $3.90 a share, or near its 50-day moving average of $3.56 a share. One can also buy PRKR off strength once it takes out $4.29 a share with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

This stock has been hit hard by the bears so far in 2013, with shares off by 44%.
If you take a look at the chart for Demand Media, you'll notice that this stock has recently formed a triple bottom over the last month, with shares finding buying interest at $4.80, $4.72 and $4.88 a share. 2. Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) The REIT is another alternative vehicle that's gone mainstream in recent years. Hundreds of broad-based and specialized real estate companies and ETFs are available, and after a correction a few months ago, many are on the cheap side. Like any other alternative, this should be a seasoning for your portfolio and not the sauce itself. For most retail investors, a stake in an indexed fund like the SPDR Dow Jones REIT (NYSE: RWR) should be more than adequate, or look into the companies that provide services to the REIT industry like HFF (NYSE: HF) and Jones Lang LaSalle (NYSE: JLL). - [By Chuck Saletta]

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Dan Caplinger]
Conditions in the coal market continue to be tough, but many companies are adapting to the difficult situation in the industry. Peabody Energy (NYSE: BTU ) has benefited from its low-cost coal supplies and has taken advantage of lucrative export markets, where natural gas prices are far less competitive and coal much more popular. Peers Arch Coal (NYSE: ACI ) and CONSOL Energy (NYSE: CNX ) have done their best to follow Peabody's lead into the export markets, with Arch signing a deal to give it greater export capacity and CONSOL owning its own terminal in Baltimore. By contrast, James River hasn't really pursued exports as an option, leaving it much more exposed to harsher regulation and plentiful natural gas supplies.
