gopro.com If a thrill-seeking mountain biker wants to take on some choppy terrain, it might not be a bad idea to ride GoPro's (GPRO) stock chart. One of the market's most volatile stocks is the maker of wearable cameras that extreme sporting enthusiasts -- like our mountain biker here -- don to record their feats of fancy. It's been a tale of two quarters for GoPro in its first six months as a public company. GoPro went public at $24 in late June, soaring in subsequent weeks. It peaked in early October, more than quadrupling to hit $98.47. It has gone on to shed more than 40 percent of its value. The wild swings aren't a surprise. GoPro went public with plenty of hype this summer, and valuation concerns were bound to come up after it roared out of the gate. Why was GoPro so hot six months ago? Why has it been so cold this quarter? Let's take a look at the two sides of the GoPro mania. Meet the Hot IPO of 2014 It's easy to see why investors gravitated toward GoPro. We've all seen those breathtaking helmet-mounted high-def videos of skateboarders, skiers and hang gliders, and GoPro is the wearable camera of choice for adrenaline junkies like these. GoPro came to market with the speed of some of its action videos. Revenue more than doubled in 2012, and nearly did so again in 2013 when its top line soared 87 percent to hit $985.7 million. Earnings and operating profits were also on a tear. Another thing that helped GoPro was that it more than lived up to the hype. It posted better-than-expected earnings in its first two quarterly reports as a public company, and first! impressi! ons for Wall Street debutantes linger. Investors sometimes stay away from hardware plays, especially in a cutthroat market like video cameras. However, GoPro made it clear at the time of its IPO that its grander goal was to become a media company. It wanted to tap into the growing content created by GoPro users to create a social video platform of its own. It went on to hire Guggenheim

Best Defense Companies To Invest In Right Now

Why try to beat 'em if you can just buy 'em? That's the approach that Questcor Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: QCOR  ) is taking. The biotech announced today that it has acquired rights to develop Syncathen andSynacthen Depot in the U.S. fromNovartis (NYSE: NVS  ) . Questcor is paying $60 million up front and at least $75 million over the next few years, plus potential milestone payments. Shares were up nearly 25% in early trading.

What it means
Questcor appears to be playing both defense and offense with this move. On the defensive front, buying rights to Synacthen makes a lot of sense. Synacthen is a synthetic version of adrenocorticotropic hormone, or ACTH, which is the active ingredient in Acthar.

There's at least one big difference between Acthar and Synacthen, though. Questcor charges $28,000 per vial for Acthar. Synacthen Depot sells for around 3% of the cost of Acthar. You read that right -- Acthar costs 30 times more than the its synthetic rival.

In the past, hedge funds provided investors with a way to invest large amounts of money without much government regulation. In the past few years, government scrutiny into hedge funds has increased enormously. As a result, some of America largest hedge funds have opted to shrink away from the powers that be by becoming amily offices. But, even in the face of increased federal oversight, there are some entities that are doing just the opposite. Indeed, some family offices are bucking the trend by becoming hedge funds that can seek out new clientele and invest with a wide range of investor capital. The more common move to shift from hedge fund to closed family office was popularized by large hedge funds and hedge fund managers like George Soros (Trades, Portfolio), Carl Icahn (Trades, Portfolio), and Steve Cohen SAC Capital Advisors (now Point72 Asset Management). Some estimates suggest that there are over 1,000 different family offices throughout the nation. Although popular discourse has suggested that this is a negative move, many family-office-to-hedge-fund conversions are based on sound business planning. The legitimacy of switching from a hedge fund to a family office is generally only applicable in situations where the hedge fund manager controls extensive capital. For instance, George Soros (Trades, Portfolio) was able to start his family office with a hefty $24 billion to invest. Of course, as a family office, the Soros Fund Management LLC cannot solicit outside investors or manage any money that does not belong to the Soros family. For family offices that do not have $24 billion in capital to work with, remaining in business as a family office limits their investment options. Shares of Rockwell Collins (COL) have rebounded today after selling off yesterday on news that it would make a billion dollar acquisition.

    AFP

Yesterday, Rockwell Collins said it would purchase Arinc from the Carlyle Group for $1.4 billion, as the U.S. defense company seeks to bolster its air communications business. Rockwell’s stock fell 1.5% yesterday on the news.

Sterne Agee, however, came out in support of the deal today. Analysts Peter Arment and Josh Sullivan note that the deal, while expensive, will go a long way towards boosting the company’s aerospace business in the years to come. They write:

The purchase price of $1.4 billion results in an estimated transaction multiple of ~12x-13x 2013 EBITDA, which is at the very high end of the range of transaction multiples for aerospace M&A deals. However, the scarcity value of the type of business of ARINC coupled with the growing theme of connectivity in aviation warrants a more strategic valuation…

With an improving outlook with aerospace profits becoming 60% of the mix by FY15 vs. 50% today, COL can return to supporting a higher valuation.

The analysts are such big fans of the deal, that they raised Rockwell Collins to a Buy from Neutral.

The credit rating firms are not so thrilled by the deal, which will be financed entirely with debt. Yesterday, Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s both said they would reevaluate their debt ratings for Rockwell Collins, and this morning Fitch followed suit by placing it on watch for a downgrade. Fitch said:

Fitch’s primary credit concern is the timing of COL’s return to stronger metrics, including the risk of sequestration and of a weaker economy that could constrain the company’s earnings and cash flow and slow a reduction in leverage. This concern is mitigated by COL’s solid margins and strong cash flow generation which were typically deployed towards share repurc

In one of my previous articles where I was speaking of Bombardier (BDRAF) troubles because of the drop in oil prices, I had mentioned that analysts are expecting the oil prices to drop as low as $60 a barrel. It seems that time has come as Brent Crude oil price touched $60.79 a barrel according to NASDAQ. The following is chart shows the fluctuations in the Brent Crude Oil Spot Price. Carmakers Care About Your Safety. They Really Do.

The Connected Car Conference -- or C3, if you wish to get your geek on -- was a big hit at CE Week in New York City. Thanks largely to navigation and entertainment apps on Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) and Google (NASDAQ: GOOG  ) smartphones, it's easy to marvel at how far we've come in bringing our outside world inside our vehicle. But C3 also concentrated on the future, and what automakers and their partners are doing to increase your car's usefulness and safety.

Our roving reporter Rex Moore talked with General Motors (NYSE: GM  ) Chief Technology Officer Tim Nixon at the conference. His Chevrolet MyLink system offers Pandora (NYSE: P  ) and Sirius XM (NASDAQ: SIRI  ) for entertainment, a BringGo navigation system that runs from your smartphone so your maps are never out of date, and Apple's Siri Eyes Free, which allows you to interact with Siri without having to view the screen. In fact, the screen won't even light up while your car is in motion.

In the following video, Tim talks about the possibility of legislation involving safety in the vehicle, and why it wouldn't be a problem for GM.

Top 5 Semiconductor Stocks For 2015

Despite industry and company headwinds, investors shouldn't ignore the strengths of this leading semiconductor stock, argues Elliott Gue, editor of Capitalist Times.

Intel Corp. (INTC) posted third-quarter revenue of $13.5 billionn increase of 5% sequentially and roughly flat, relative to year-ago levels.

Excluding the effects of one-time factors, the company's earnings per share came in at $0.49. These results were in line with Bloomberg consensus estimates.

However, some analysts were disappointed that Intel lowered its fourth-quarter sales guidance to between $13.2 billion and $14.2 billion, which equates to a 2% decline or a 5% increase, relative to the preceding quarter. Management attributed this slight downward revision to soft PC demand.

Bearish commentators cite Intel's limited share of the rapidly growing mobile and tablet markets and the challenges that the firm faces in stealing business away from ARM Holdings (ARMH).

    Micropac

Micropac is 76% owned by Heinz-Werner Hempel. He a German businessman. You can see the German company he founded here. He had control of Micropac for a long-time. I don have an exact number in front of me. But I would guess it been something like 25 years.

    ADDvantage

ADDvantage Technologies is controlled by the Chymiak brothers. See the company April 4 press release explaining their decision to turn over the CEO position to an outsider. Regardless, the Chymiaks still control 47% of the company. Ken Chymiak is now chairman. And David Chymiak is still a director and now the company chief technology officer. Clearly, it still their company.

By the way, the name ADDvantage Technologies has nothing to do with the Chymiaks. Today AEY really traces its roots to a private company called Tulsat. The Chymiak brothers acquired that company about 27 years ago. So, effectively, when you buy shares of AEY you are buying into a 27-year-old family-controlled company.

That pretty typical in the world of net-nets.

    Solitron

Solitron Devices is 29% owned by Shevach Saraf. He has been the CEO for 20 years. The post-bankruptcy Solitron has never known another CEO. Before the bankruptcy, Solitron was a much bigger, much different company. So even though we are not talking about the founder here and even though 70% of the company shares are not held by the CEO wee still talking about a company where one person has a lot of control. Solitron only has three directors. Saraf is the chairman, CEO, president, CFO and treasurer. Neither of the other two directors joined the board within the last 15 years. So, we aren talking about a lot of tumult at the top.

In fact, profitable net-nets seem to be especially common candidates for abandoning the responsibilities of a public company without actually getting taken private.

  • [By Geoff Gannon] on the amount of stock you can buy and the position size you like. For me, I try not to start buying a stock that I think will never make up 10% of my portfolio. If you don mind having 5% positions in your portfolio, your portfolio can obviously be twice as big as mine and you can still consider buying the same small stocks I do. In terms of specific stocks, it depends on the amount of float and the volume the stock trades in an average month. We are really getting into specifics here. And I may be boring people. But if you like to hear more about the minutiae of how you actually buy and sell tiny stocks like these, let me know, and Il do an article on the subject.

By the way, there is a hard and fast rule of thumb that it usually makes no sense to invest in a company with a market cap that is smaller than your portfolio. This is true for both fund and individual investors. Funds break it all the time. But, frankly, it is probably a waste of an analyst/fund manager time to even analyze such tiny positions relative to the size of the whole portfolio. Since even when we are discussing very small stocks we are still talking about millions and millions of dollars in market cap, this is hardly a concern for most individuals.

So, for individual investors, actual inability to acquire enough shares of a company to meaningful influence their portfolio is rarely the problem. If you bid for a stock month after month youl get your shares.

The concern for individual investors is not whether buying enough shares is possible. The concern is how quickly and easily you can buy and sell. This is what we call iquidity./p>

Instead of thinking about stocks as liquid or illiquid, you should think in terms of your portfolio and your liquidity needs. It doesn't make much sense to use what I'll call an "objective" (as in stock-oriented) approach to liquidity rather than a "subjective" (as in investor-oriented) approach to liquidity.
