6 Financial Moves to Prevent Sleepless Nights

Like car alarms that go off at 3 a.m. or those echoing drips in the bathroom sink, financial worries are costing many Americans sleep, according to a recent poll by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC).

Nearly four out of five poll respondents said that money worries kept them awake at night. Those results might be a little skewed, because the poll was taken via the NFCC website, and presumably many of its visitors are people with credit problems. Still, the point is valid -- when someone has money problems, those problems tend to creep around in the middle of the night, making misery.

Keeping money worries at bay
Here is the key thing to remember: The middle of the night is not the time to confront your financial fears. You need to work on them in the light of day, when you can do something constructive about them. Here are some positive steps you can take to put your financial worries to sleep:

Create a budget to get current expenses below income. Debt may be your most troubling problem, but you cannot think about reducing it until you stop overspending. Focus on the present by formulating a budget that brings spending below income. Only then can you begin to think about addressing your debt. Prioritize debt by interest expense. Line up those credit card statements on the kitchen table, and sort them from highest to lowest interest, so you know which sources of debt are the most costly. Target high-interest credit cards. With your credit cards prioritized by interest expense, start attacking the highest ones first. Keep up with all necessary payments, but put any extra money toward the high-interest credit cards. Balance transfers can also help reduce your credit card rates, but be careful -- opening up new accounts can damage your credit rating. However, if some of your existing cards have higher rates than the others, simply transfer as much as you can from the worst cards to the best cards. Eliminate checking account fees. Especially if you are scraping along with a low checking account balance, monthly fees can eat up a big chunk of that balance, and even cause overdrafts that lead to additional fees. Free checking accounts still exist, though you may have to look online to find them. Create a pathway to zero debt. At first, you may only be able to pay down debt in small handfuls, but project that out to determine whether you are on course to eventually eliminating your debt. Knowing the destination can help you feel better about the steps along the way. Communicate the game plan. Talk to your family about what is going on. Financial stress often comes from trying to hide the truth from other members of the household. Everyone is going to have to be part of the solution, so you need to fully explain the problem.

The first rule of getting out of financial distress is that there are no easy or instant answers. It is a process, but as long as you have mapped out the steps and go to bed each night knowing you have taken the steps you should be taking, you should start to sleep a lot better.

The company was formerly known as Conseco, Inc. and changed its name to CNO Financial Group, Inc. in May 2010. CNO Financial Group, Inc. was founded in 1979 and is headquartered in Carmel, Indiana.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Up first is CNO Financial Group (CNO), a mid-cap financial stock that's rocketed close to 60% higher since the calendar flipped over to January. Yup, it's been a great year for the market, but it's been a far better one for investors who own CNO. But that strong performance isn't showing any signs of slowing yet. In fact, CNO looks primed for even more upside in the fourth quarter.

That's bec! ause CNO is currently forming a bullish pattern called an ascending triangle. The ascending triangle pattern is formed by a horizontal resistance level above shares -- in this case at $14.75 -- and uptrending support to the downside. Basically, as CNO bounces in between those two technical price levels, it's getting squeezed closer and closer to a breakout above that $14.75 resistance level. When that breakout happens, it's time to become a buyer.

ACCO's price action isn't exactly textbook. After all, the pattern is coming in at the bottom of a downtrend, not after an uptrend. But ultimately, that doesn't change the trading implications of a move through that $7.50 level.

Whenever you're looking at any technical price pattern, it's critical to think in terms of those buyers and sellers. Ascending triangles and other pattern names are a good quick way to explain what's going on in a stock, but they're not the reason it's tradable. Instead, it all comes down to supply and demand for shares.

That $7.50 resistance level is a price where there has been an excess of supply of shares; in other words, it's a place where sellers have been more eager to step in and take gains than buyers have been to buy. That's what makes a breakout above it so significant. The move means that buyers are finally strong enough to absorb all of the excess supply above that price level.

Don't be early on this trade.

I have heard many people comment about the insurance policies for cars, houses, life, assets, etc. The arguments always revolve around the same issue: Is it really necessary? What are the chances to be hit by a Hurricane, or to meet a sudden death? Well, nobody really knows. Some individuals however, sleep better when they know a policy backs their life investments. Here, I will look into three insurance companies that concentrate on different policies, or geographies. These are: China Life (LFC), and Conseco (CNO).

Top 5 Internet Stocks To Buy For 2014

SEATTLE The criminals behind the theft and underground brokering of some 40 million Target credit and debit card account numbers can lay claim to one of the largest, most sophisticated hacks in modern times.

Yet as pervasive and costly as the Target databreach will turn out to be, it is unlikely to alter the two fundamental reasons such cyberattacks have become almost routine.

First, the U.S. stands alone as a modern nation that continues wide use of magnetic striped payment cards designed more that 40 years ago to mechanically store payment card account numbers.

In the Internet age, the rest of the world, led by Europe, Asia and Canada, has moved to chip-embedded payment cards, which are much more difficult to counterfeit.

And secondly, American corporations and consumers have become inured to public disclosures of massive databreaches and sophisticated cash-out capers.

InterActiveCorp (IACI) is Barry Diller conglomerate of internet companies, not terribly different from John Malone Liberty Interactive (LINTA). Top 5 Internet Stocks To Buy For 2014: CYNK Technology Corp (CYNK)

Cynk Technology Corp., formerly Introbuzz, Inc., is a development stage-company. The Company intends to develop a social network business. Social networks are Web based services that allow individuals to post a profile and link their profile to other friends and organizations.

The Company intends to develop a database of professional and other business persons, as well as other interested persons in providing and utilizing contacts. As of November 14, 2012, the Company had not generated any revenue.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By WWW.DAILYFINANCE.COM]

CYNK Technology (CYNK), the mysterious over-the-counter stock that at one point broke a $6 billion market cap, dropped roughly 80 percent in its first trades after a Securities and Exchange Commission halt. The SEC halted CYNK for two weeks following a massive rise in the stock's value -- it had been worth only a few cents per share in June, but it jumped above $21 on July 10. The Belize-based CYNK Technology supposedly operates a social networking site, but filings indicate it only has one employee and virtually no assets. Experts told CNBC the week of the SEC halt that they expected CYNK to fall precipitously after reopening, and its first day of trading is proving those predictions correct. When it was halted, the stock was worth just less than $14 per share, and is now below $3 a share after briefly hovering around $5 earlier Friday morning. An OTC Markets spokeswoman told Reuters that CYNK's shares were not trading on its platform, but were occurring over the phone. Earlier this week Reuters reported that OTC's CEO did not expect CYNK to trade on its platform at all after reopening, as no brokerages would file the required paperwork for the stock to trade on their exchanges. An SEC spokesman said that the organization cannot comment on the status of a company after a suspension period ends, citing an online explanation of the process. That document notes that broker-dealers may not solicit investors to trade the previously suspended OTC stock until they satisfy several regulatory requirements. The SEC warned, however, that "unsolicited" trading may occur after a reopening -- as CYNK is now seeing -- but "even though such trading is allowed, it can be very risky for investors without current and reliable information about the company."

Ronald McDonald is going chic.

Or, at least he's certainly trying to. The McDonald's icon famous for his wild red hair, yellow jumpsuit and floppy shoes, has gotten a makeover from a theatrical stylist really who has updated just about everything but the shoes.

The new Ronald sports a red blazer, a red bow tie, red-and-white striped rugby shirt, yellow vest and, yes, yellow cargo pants.

His hair is more coiffed. His vibe is less creepy. And how shall we politely say this? he looks slightly less clown-like.

"As a strategy, it feels a little desperate," says Kate Newlin, a brand consultant. She says it's as if the new Ronald is shouting: "Please remember you once loved me."

Love is sorely needed. McDonald's on Tuesday reported a 5% drop in first-quarter net income and 1.7% drop in U.S. same-store sales. Shares closed flat on Wednesday at 99.13.

At issue is the application by Sempra Energy (NYSE: SRE) for permission to export LNG from a terminal at Cameron, La.

You see, despite the fact that the Department of Energy (DOE) authorized exports in this case over a month ago, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) must still approve all export permits.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Tom Aspray]

The news out of the Eurozone continues to improve as their Purchasing Managers Index rose to 51.7 in August consistent with an expanding economy. The chart shows a nice trend here suggesting that the worst by indeed be over. A deeper pullback in some of the euro ETFs like SPDR Euro STOXX 50 ETF (FEZ) should create a buying opportunity.

  • [By Chris Ciovacco]

In Thursday's ETF analysis, evidence is presented that supports increasing demand for assets that get a tailwind from a weak U.S. dollar, including emerging markets (EEM) and foreign stocks (EFA). Casting a wider economic net, our market model told us to start buying stocks last week even with the threat of a U.S. default. Wednesday, we continued with our incremental allocation shifts by adding some exposure to the energy sector. Thursday, we sat tight holding long positions in small caps (IJR), Europe (FEZ), emerging markets and technology (QQQ). The upper bounds of the bullish S&P 500 trend channel shown below may offer some resistance to the market's near vertical ascent.

Advisors' Opinion:

The company popularly known as DuPont (NYSE: DD  ) is a shortened form of "E.I. du Pont de Nemours," itself a shortened version of the name Eluthere Irenee du Pont de Nemours, a Paris-born chemist with particular expertise as a gunpowder manufacturer. It was on July 19, 1802, on the banks of the Brandywine River in Delaware, that du Pont broke ground on the first gunpowder mills that gave rise to the DuPont chemical empire.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) is down after the International Monetary Fund reported that it expects the U.S. economy to slow, and consumer confidence came in below expectations. As of 1:30 p.m. EDT the Dow has lost 116 points, or 0.76%, led down by DuPont (NYSE: DD  ) after it lowered its guidance and was downgraded by Merrill Lynch. The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC  ) is down 0.67%.

  • [By Travis Hoium]

DuPont (NYSE: DD  ) is lagging the Dow today, falling 1.6% after getting some reasonably good news. The U.S. Department of Agriculture said today that farmers planted a record number of acres of soybeans and corn this year, using 93% and 90% genetically engineered seeds, respectively. DuPont is one of the biggest seed suppliers, so that should mean higher demand for its products over the past quarter. Of course, futures of both corn and soybeans fell once the news was released, so the bump in demand may only be a temporary one.

Whether from outside pressure or internal decision making, the specialty chemicals industry is seeing more streamlining going on. DuPont (NYSE: DD  ) sold its performance coating unit in 2012 for $4.9 billionand, last year, announced the spinoff of its performance chemicals unit, having receivedinput from another activist investor, Nelson Peltz, who had taken a $1.3 billion stake in the company.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By BDC Buzz]

Fidus Investment (FDUS) is one of the newer business development companies ("BDCs") but its stock performance has been strong with a steady climb to higher than average multiples. This is most likely due to its higher than average 'total return' of around 16%. Last quarter FDUS grew its net asset value ("NAV") per share more than any of the other 25 BDCs that I follow and announced a special dividend on top of its regular dividends which is currently yielding around 8%. The company announced that it received approval for a second SBIC license giving it access to cheap long-term growth capital to grow the portfolio and dividends. FDUS also reported realized gains in Q3 from exited investments that could provide for some large upcoming special dividends. I believe that investors should look beyond the current lower than average dividend yield and higher than average pricing multiples, and consider the potential total return for FDUS over the coming quarters. I will also address my key concerns for the company and some things to watch for through the end of the year.

During the quarter, Perrigo (PRGO) announced strong September quarter adjusted earnings growth of 20%. We say djustedbecause the Company incurred what we believe are non-recurring charges related to the recent purchase of Elan Corporation, which is a branded-drug company domiciled in Ireland. Upon the closing of this purchase, Perrigo has e-domicileditself in Ireland, with an effective tax rate meaningfully below what they were subjected to in the U.S. Given that the Company actively pursues a strategy of inorganic growth as much as it pursues organic growth - having acquired six new businesses over the past 18 months (including Elan) - we expect that this new tax structure should make future acquisitions, particularly those U.S. based businesses, much more attractive. Further, Perrigo core business, which includes private-label over-the-counter (OTC) pharmaceuticals and infant formula, drove much of the year-over-year growth. The Company unrivaled scale in manufacturing and marketing of store-branded offerings continues to enable retailers to mimic the value proposition of OTC pharmaceuticals and infant formula. This tore-brand conversionis a multi-year trend that we expect will continue for the foreseeable future as consumers continue to become more value-conscious, yet more comfortable with store-brand quality that Perrigo helps engineer.

Best Financial Companies To Own For 2014

Margin of safety and risk aversion is Seth Klarman central investment tenet. And risk aversion begins with defining a margin of safety for your investments. In his book Margin of Safety, Klarman outlines three of the best ways to build a winning stock portfolio:

路 Consider the risk and downside associated with the investment before focusing on potential returns.

路 Perform a bottom-up approach on individual companies while ignoring the industry and its connections with the economic cycle as a whole.

路 Evaluate how the company achieves its returns and research why revenues and profits have increased or decreased year by year.

The key to downside risk protection

In the current financial market environment, unprecedented things are happening with surprising regularity. This is as true for our preparations for financial disaster as for any other kind. And when the memories of disaster, along with worry and diligence, dim over time, it leads to complacency in investors. Complacent investors naturally focus more on benefits and the focus on benefits will lessen the concern over what could go wrong. It is important to prepare your investments for stormy times and one way to do this is to consider the downside protection an investment offers. Downside protection starts with understanding the risks associated with the investment. When the risks are identified, then the best course of action is developing a plan for protecting against those downsides. One of the most popular forms of downside protection is investing with a margin of safety.

Gross output (GO) measures the total output of an economy, including investments made by businesses in order to produce their goods, such as capital outlays on new equipment, raw materials, or other business-to-business transactions. In Structure, Skousen makes the case that modern economists downplay the importance of the business sector in the economy and overstate the importance of consumer spending. He believes that the GDP should not be used as the sole measure of economic activity.

  • [By Mark Salzinger, Editor and Publisher, No-Load Fund Investor]

The most recent news for MyEcheck Inc is not so recent as it dates from last April and was an announcement that the company would license its proprietary system to other operators for a share of their transaction revenue on the system with the CEO pointing out: n addition to our processing revenue, we will have licensing revenue that will exceed our processing revenue in a relatively short period of time." However, a quick look at MyEcheck Inc financials reveals revenues of $3k (most recent reported quarter), zero, zero and zero for the past four quarters along with net income of $387k (most recent reported quarter) and net losses of $8k, $35k and $14k. At the end of last June, MyEcheck Inc had no cash to cover $804k in current liabilities. So maybe investor will want to wait for evidence of licensing and processing revenue to materialize.

But the industry has gone through some major merger and acquisition activity recently. Sherwin-Williams announced last November that it will acquire Mexico's Consorcio Comex for $2.34 billion, giving the company greater geographical and product diversity. That'll be an important source of growth for Sherwin-Williams, as rival PPG Industries (NYSE: PPG  ) recently closed on its $1.05 billion acquisition of Akzo Nobel and its architectural coatings business. Moreover, with DuPont (NYSE: DD  ) having sold off its performance-coatings business, which focuses largely on automotive paint, to private equity firm Carlyle Group, Sherwin-Williams needed to boost its size in order to keep up with its competition.

The company has a current ratio of 17.8% which is higher than the industry mean of 6.55%. On December 22, 2011, the Company acquired substantially all of the assets owned by Liangcai Zhang in the Shouguang City Yangkou Township Area.

Bromine and Crude Salt

The Company manufactures and distributes bromine through its wholly owned subsidiary, SCHC. T! his causes the water to evaporate from the brine, resulting in salt being left over afterwards. Big Earnings Movers: Gogo Inc. (NASDAQ: GOGO) is up 28.3% at $24.05. Gulf Resources Inc. (NASDAQ: GURE) is up 15.8% at $2.46.

Stocks on the Move: ViroPharma Inc. (NASDAQ: VPHM) is up 25.4% at $49.38 on a $4.2 billion buyout offer from London-listed Shire. Zalicus Inc. (NASDAQ: ZLCS) is down 72.3% at $1.30 on a failed drug trial.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another under-$10 basic materials player that's starting to move within range of triggering a major breakout trade is Gulf Resources (GURE), which manufactures and trades bromine and crude salt, and manufactures and sells chemical products used in oil and gas field exploration. This stock has been a favorite target of the bulls so far in 2013, with shares up sharply by 140%.

If you take a look at the chart for Gulf Resources, you'll notice that this stock has been uptrending strong for the last six months, with shares soaring higher from its low of $1.10 to its recent high of $3.10 a share. During that uptrend, shares of GURE have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of GURE within range of triggering a major breakout trade.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in GURE if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $2.87 to its 52-week high at $3.10 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 467,986 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then GURE will set up to enter new 52-week high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $4 to $4.50 a share.

Traders can look to buy GURE off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some near-term support levels at $2.38 a share, or near its 50-day moving average of $2.23 a share. One can also buy GURE off strength once it starts to clear those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Given this fact, and the fact that consumer electronics (CE) is a cyclical industry, flash supply and demand balance is very tenuous. Frantic production to catch up to demand often leads to dramatic over-supply when the CE market cools off. One needs only to look at SanDisk's financials to see this. The company swung from a $917 dollar operations loss in 2008 to a $1.5 billion dollar profit in 2011, and which was then cut in half to just a $700 million profit the following year!
